A British strength brand, rooted in kushti

Bring the Akhara Home.

Traditional strength, modern equipment, built for your household.

Our story

From the Pit to the Front Room

Long before there were gyms, there were akharas.

For centuries across the Indian subcontinent, young men and women trained in akharas — community strength schools where the pehlwan, the hero-wrestler, was built not with machines, but with bodyweight, discipline, and mugdar clubs swung morning and night to build the shoulders and grip that modern dumbbells now exist to replicate.

Somewhere between migration, modern gym culture, and the daily reality of desi household life, that tradition got left behind. Today, British South Asians are the least physically active major ethnic group in the UK — not because the drive for strength disappeared, but because the spaces built for “fitness” rarely felt built for us. Mainstream gyms that don’t feel welcoming. Facilities that don’t accommodate modesty. A culture that treats a trip to the gym as a luxury rather than a birthright.

Pehlwan exists to bring the akhara home.

We believe strength shouldn’t require a gym membership, a commute, or a space that makes you feel like an outsider in your own pursuit of health. We build gym equipment for the front room, the garage, the space you already have — so that the tradition of the pehlwan can live in every desi household again, on your own terms, in your own time, with your own family.

“This isn’t about starting something new. It’s about remembering something we already had.”
